Sustainability is core to our business idea. But what is sustainability and how do we contribute?
Sustainable Development Goals by the United Nations
Implemented in 2015, the United Nations and all its member states launched the Sustainable Development goals. They are a universal call to action to stop poverty, to protect our planet and to improve the lives and prospects of each and everyone, globally. The UN member states came up with a 15-year agenda which includes strategies for meeting the objectives. The agenda includes 17 sustainable development goals. Every person, every corporation and every country is invited to follow, promote and implement strategies to achieve these goals. The graphic below states all 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs)
What is sustainable development?
According to the United Nations, “sustainable development has been defined as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” We from ecocobowls want to support reaching the 2030 goals by raising awareness and to live by the principles ourselves. Help us protect our planet by creating an economy where the environment and the people benefit together.
Which Sustainable Development Goals do we support?
We are focusing on goal 12 (responsible consumption & production) and on goal 14 (life below water). To read more about the details of these goals please visit the Website of the United Nations.
Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production
Over the last century, economic and social progress has been accompanied by environmental degradation which endangers the very systems on which our future development and very survival depend. If the world population reaches 9.6 billion by 2050, it could require the equivalent of nearly three planets to provide the natural resources needed to sustain current lifestyles.
This is why we want to focus on products which are environmental-friendly. Coconut shells are a natural product, which are falling from the coconut tree. After a certain lifespan, a coconut tree does not carry any coconuts anymore and the tree eventually will be cut down. However, this is a natural process and no tree will be cut down just to produce our coconut products. We obtain our coconut shells from coconut oil producers in Sumatra. This gives the “waste product” coconut shell a new use again. Thus we stop the release of CO², because otherwise the empty coconut shells are usually burned. In addition, we give the local people a chance to generate income and to produce a beautiful product for your home.
Goal 14: Life below water
The ocean is driving global systems which make the Earth habitable for humans. Ultimately, our rainwater, drinking water, atmosphere, environment, coastlines, much of our food and even the oxygen in the air we breathe is all supplied and controlled by the sea.
Careful management of this important global resource is a crucial feature of a sustainable future. Currently, however, coastal waters are continually deteriorating due to pollution and ocean acidification has an adversarial effect on ecosystem functioning and biodiversity. Small-scale fisheries are also affected negatively. Specifically, we want to help to achieve goal 14.1: “By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution”
I had the privilege in my past to be able to travel along the most beautiful coastlines in South East Asia. However, plastic pollution was a big issue at almost every beach. Plastic bags, plastic straws and all kinds of trash were right at the beach or in the water. This makes it not only less enjoyable for me as a visitor but it also negatively affects all animals in the water and consequently the local fishermen as well.
Supporting beach cleanups in Thailand
Back in January 2019, I’ve participated in a beach cleanup in Koh Lipe, Thailand. I would love to further support non-profit organizations and clean-up initiatives in the future! By supporting us, sharing our pages and ideas you set the foundation towards cleaner oceans. Below a picture of plastic and trash, we have collecte during the cleanup.
How to continue?
We are just at the beginning of our journey, and there is a lot to do in the future. By sharing knowledge and raising awareness about sustainable development goals, everyone can contribute to helping our environment, our planet and each and every one. We hope, we could provide you with a little overview of how we want to focus on sustainability. We appreciate your support and hope that you have learned something new and exciting in this article.
